Ford brought the game up a notch when they released the 2003 Mustang Cobra. The damn near 1400hp capable stock internals, the strong 6speed, and the supercharger to move the goods. Was Ford trying to dominate? A bud of mine named Danny was all over these cars. I mean to date, the dude has had 3 of them. I don’t know why he cant stay away, but I can tell you his newest one is 11 months in the making, and has the potential to be a killer from its rebirth!
When Danny got this car from Nebraska it had a Whipple, 60lb injectors, an aftermarket clutch, and a few other mods on it. Not too long though after getting the car Danny got the news that the compression on the motor was lower than normal, it was time to go into the block and fix the problem. But like all of us, when Danny decided to fix the problem, it was not an easy “back to stock” fix, but more or less a chance to go a different route with the power adders. After calling up Rick Erdman of Amazon Tuning Solutions in Anderson, Danny planned his choice of actions. A few weeks later, the motor was being pulled and a different type of boost was being mentioned!
The 76mm Hellion kit was the choice they went with, and being mated with a stiff ass clutch and a 99 Cobra intake manifold, Danny was ready to reassemble. But like I said before ,this was no stock fixing, and it also did not go by like a stock build. This thing took 9 months to complete, being worked on mostly at nights and the weekends. I am sure there was some waiting on parts thrown in, mixed with the changing of minds on parts a few times!
Fast forward a little bit! Danny calls me up early on Saturday morning and tells me that he is headed to the dyno to fix a boost problem and get some 17-18lb pulls. Kyle and myself bounced out of the house and go down to Amazon Tuning to chill with Danny, KB, and Rick and to see how the car does.
When we get there, the car is having a problem and wont go over 11lbs. The spring was the problem, and before you know it Rick and Danny are up under the car taking the wastegate off!
After the spring change, the car goes up in boost fast! In fact, so fast that the piping blows off the Throttle Body, but we see an instant 17lbs and we know that the change was a success!
While still on pump gas, we manage to pull out an uncorrected 573hp/588tq on 93 octane. Not bad at all on a mustang dyno, but the car has tons of power left in it! More to come on this car, so stay tuned to GreasyBlocks!
